Venus Williams brought the glitter. Rafael Nadal brought the grit. On a Friday night that felt like bonus tennis at the U.S. Open, Williams and Nadal performed like players on a mission -- maybe trying to outhustle a hurricane that never showed, or maybe, in Williams' case, trying to finish in time to catch the end of cocktail hour.
Defending champion Kim Clijsters has moved to the round of 16 at the U.S. Open by winning the final 12 games in her 6-3, 6-0 victory over No. 27 Petra Kvitova. No. 2 Clijsters dropped two service games to fall behind 3-0 early Friday in Arthur Ashe Stadium, then ran off 12 straight against her opponent from the Czech Republic.
Even Rafael Nadal felt compelled to applaud when his second-round opponent at the U.S. Open hit a spectacular, full-sprint winner and was left doing the splits at the net. The shot put Denis Istomin within two points of tying the match at a set apiece. He couldn't manage to close the deal, though -- a recurring theme for Nadal's game-but-outclassed foil in the No.
Britain's Andy Murray has defeated Jamaica's Dustin Brown 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 to move into the third round of the U.S. Open. The fourth-seeded Murray is seeking to make his second U.S. Open final in three years. He won this year's U.S. Open Series title, which means he could earn up to an extra $1 million in prize money if he wins the tournament.
Because of a sprained left kneecap, Venus Williams took a lot more time off before the U.S. Open than originally planned. Those two months away from competition sure haven't presented any problems so far. Her play sparkling as much as her sequined dress, Williams easily eliminated 185th-ranked qualifier Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 6-2, 6-1 on Friday night to reach the U.S.
Twelfth-seeded Elena Dementieva beat 24th-seeded Daniela Hantuchova 7-5, 6-2 Friday in the third round of the U.S. Open. Dementieva, the 2004 runner-up at Flushing Meadows, has reached the semifinals three times but lost in the second round last year. The Russian missed Wimbledon with a left calf injury and has fallen out of the top 10 in the rankings for the first time in more than three years.
Former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic is back in the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the first time since 2007, and she'll take on defending champion Kim Clijsters next. Serbia's Ivanovic easily eliminated 157th-ranked wild card Virginie Razzano of France 7-5, 6-0 in the third round at Flushing Meadows on Friday.

With nothing to play for, the United States looked as if it didn't want to play. Outworked and outhustled, the Americans led winless Tunisia by only four points early in the third quarter before turning the game into a rout over the final 15 minutes of a 92-57 victory Thursday. Eric Gordon scored 21 points for the U.S., which had already clinched first place in its group and was more interested...
Aleksandar Rasic made four free throws in the last 11 seconds Thursday to help Serbia upset top-ranked Argentina 84-82 and win Group A at the basketball world championship. Argentina captain and Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola sank two free throws with 38 seconds left to make it 77-77, but Serbia's Dusko Savanovic hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining.
LeBron James didn't change all his teams this summer. James posted on his Twitter feed Thursday that he's considering going to Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 11 to see the matchup between No. 2 Ohio State -- his longtime team of choice -- and No. 13 Miami. And no, the former Cleveland Cavaliers star isn't rooting for the Hurricanes.
The Atlanta Hawks have signed free agent center Etan Thomas to add bulk in the frontcourt. The 6-foot-10 Thomas spent most of his career with the Washington Wizards but finished last season with Oklahoma City. He's averaged 5.8 point and 4.8 rebounds per game over his eight-year career, which includes 74 starts.
Marcelo Machado scored 18 points, Anderson Varejao grabbed 12 rebounds in his longest stint at the world championship, and Brazil clinched third place in Group B with a 92-74 victory over Croatia on Thursday. Brazil (3-2) bounced back from a pair of narrow losses to earn a meeting with South American rival Argentina on Tuesday.

Teams spend months sweating matchups. Then comes Sept. 1, and a bunch of call-ups throw a monkey wrench in those plans. Does baseball really need to expand rosters at such a crucial time in the season? Scott Miller has another option.

It's hard to criticize the Yankees. They sit atop the AL East as well as own the best record in the majors. However, Danny Knobler says glaring issues loom around their rotation, particularly A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte.

Here is the postseason schedule by series.
Lauren Jackson wasn't available postgame to talk about winning her third WNBA MVP award or the Seattle Storm's win in the opener of the Western Conference finals. Her performance against Phoenix in Game 1 on Thursday night speaks for itself. Jackson had 23 points and a team playoff-record 17 rebounds to lead Seattle to an 82-74 victory over the Mercury.
Seattle Storm forward Lauren Jackson of Australia was selected the WNBA's most valuable player for the third time in her career on Thursday. Jackson was honored before Game 1 of Seattle's best-of-3 Western Conference final against defending champion Phoenix. Also, the Storm's Brian Agler was named the league's coach of the year.
A look at the two best-of-three WNBA conference finals, which start Thursday: EASTERN CONFERENCE No. 2 New York (22-12) vs. No. 4 Atlanta (19-15) Season Series: Tied 2-2, with each time winning once on the road. New York: A roster overhaul that brought Cappie Pondexter, Nicole Powell and Taj McWilliams-Franklin to the Liberty in the offseason resulted in a team record for victories one year after...
Despite finishing with a franchise playoff record for scoring, Cappie Pondexter gave Kia Vaughn all the credit for helping the New York Liberty advance to the Eastern Conference finals. Pondexter scored 30 points, including a tiebreaking jumper with 28 seconds remaining, and Vaughn had a season-high 13 points in extended playing time to lead the Liberty to a 77-74 victory over the Indiana Fever on...
While the Seattle Storm were on their way to a fifth straight first-round WNBA playoff loss in 2009, Le'Coe Willingham was on her way to a third appearance in the finals -- and her first championship -- as she and the Phoenix Mercury won it all. Last week, Willingham helped the Storm shake that opening-round hex with a two-game sweep of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Ben Roethlisberger is getting time off for good behavior. He'll be back on the field for the Pittsburgh Steelers two games earlier than expected after convincing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell he is turning his life around. The star quarterback, accompanied by team president Art Rooney, met with Goodell early Friday and was told he could return on Oct.
Elvis Dumervil's season is officially sacked. The Denver Broncos had been holding out hope the league's top sacker would make a quicker than anticipated recovery from a torn chest muscle and return to action in December. Dumervil, however, posted a message on his Twitter account Friday night that confirmed an NFL.com report he'll be going on injured reserve, ending his season.
Ben Roethlisberger isn't the only Steelers quarterback who might be out for four weeks. Byron Leftwich's strained left knee ligament could sideline him for most or all of the first month of the season, leaving the Steelers with only two healthy quarterbacks -- Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch -- for their Sept.
Outside linebacker Cody Brown, a second-round draft pick out of Connecticut a year ago, was among 16 players cut by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday. Meanwhile, coach Ken Whisenhunt says he has told rookie quarterbacks Max Hall and John Skelton they have made Arizona's 53-man roster. The fate of Matt Leinart remained uncertain.
Patrick Crayton wanted out the minute the Dallas Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant. He finally got his wish Friday, and it might've been worth the wait. Crayton was dealt to the San Diego Chargers, where he'll be a bigger part of the offense than he would've been in Dallas and still will be playing for a contender.

Second-round tee times for Deutsche Bank Championship
Tiger Woods was expecting the worst at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and that's what he got. Only it was from his game, not from Hurricane Earl. Even after the late starters on the TPC Boston came in from occasional bursts of rain -- none of them able to catch Zach Johnson and Jason Day atop the leaderboard at 8-under 63 -- they realized they got off the course in reasonable shape.
Mark Calcavecchia shot an 8-under 64 on Friday at Del Monte to take a two-stroke lead over Tom Pernice Jr. in the Champions Tour's dual-course First Tee Open. Calcavecchia, in his first season on the 50-and-over tour after winning 13 times on the PGA Tour, capped his bogey-free first round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole to equal his career low on the senior circuit.
Second-round tee times for Home Care & Hospice First Tee Open at Pebble Beach
Zach Johnson and Jason Day beat up on the course and beat the weather at the Deutsche Bank Championship. For Tiger Woods, it was the other way around. Johnson strengthened his Ryder Cup case Friday by rolling in putts from everywhere in easy scoring conditions ahead of Hurricane Earl, giving him an 8-under 63 and a share of the first-round lead with Day.

Jaime Garcia told himself it was just another game, and when Brandon Phillips came to the plate it was just another hitter. The rookie maintained his focus to beat the Reds for the fourth time, halting the free-falling St. Louis Cardinals' five-game losing streak and ending Cincinnati's four-game run in a 3-2 victory on Friday night.
Aaron Cook was his usual hard-to-beat self at Petco Park, which wasn't exactly what the skidding San Diego Padres wanted to see. Cook returned from a monthlong stay on the disabled list to win again in San Diego and the Colorado Rockies handed the reeling NL West-leading Padres their season-high eighth straight loss, 4-3 on Friday night.
Nyjer Morgan's wild week has landed him an eight-game suspension, one of nine punishments handed out Friday by Major League Baseball following a brawl between Washington Nationals and Florida Marlins. MLB suspended Nationals outfielder Morgan and fined him an undisclosed amount for three separate incidents over the past week.
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has undergone season-ending surgery for a broken bone in his left foot. A screw was inserted into the foot in Friday's operation. The 2008 AL MVP finished the season with 12 homers, 41 RBIs and a .288 batting average. Pedroia fouled a ball off his foot on June 25.
Alex Rodriguez and longtime agent Scott Boras have split. "I'm not going to get into the details, but I will tell you that Scott and I had a good run," the New York Yankees slugger said Friday. "Nothing drastic happened, it's just at this point in my career my goal is to finish as a New York Yankee and be a world champion again.
